Hesse-Cassel 1847 5 thaler Fr-1296
This specimen was lot 3725 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,100 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HESSEN-KASSEL, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM Wilhelm II. und Friedrich Wilhelm, 1832-1847. 5 Taler 1847. GOLD. RR Nur 1.438 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Hesse-Cassel, William II and Frederick William, 1832-47, five thaler of 1847. Rare, only 1,438 struck, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This denomination, like all the gold issues of Hesse-Cassel, is rare and expensive. The five thaler was equal to a Prussian friedrichs d'or. This type is noted for 1847 only. Hesse-Cassel ended up on the wrong side of one of the Austro-Prussian wars and was annexed to Prussia in 1866.
Recorded mintage: 1,438.
Specification: 6.65 g, 0.903 fine gold, .194 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6,65 g.
