Sincona sale 51, lot 3206

This specimen was lot 3206 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,327 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, Wilhelm IX. (I.), 1785-1821. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1786, Hanau. Ausbeute der Bieberer Gruben. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William IX, 1785-1821, half convention thaler of 1786, Hanau mint, for the Bieberer mine. Rare, About extremely fine, Nice toning.)"

This type was struck 1786 only. The only other Hesse-Cassal coin of 1786 is a groschen (KM 529, struck 1786-1803). Wilhelm was made an elector in 1803 but found his electorate annexed by Napoleon to the kingdom of Westphalia in 1806. He was restored in 1813 but the electorate was annexed by Prussia in 1866 after supporting the Austrians.
