Hesse-Cassel 1789-F 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 888 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €240 (about US$324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, Wilhelm IX. (I.), 1785-1803 (-1821). 1/2 hessischer Reichstaler (1/2 Wilhelmstaler) 1789, Kassel. Vorzüglich +. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William IX, 1785-1803, half Hessian thaler of 1789, Cassel mint. Extremely fine or better.)"
This was only the second half thaler issued by this ruler. Wilhelm was made an elector in 1803 but found his electorate annexed by Napoleon to the kingdom of Westphalia in 1806. He was restored in 1813 but the electorate was annexed by Prussia in 1866 after supporting the Austrians.
