This specimen was lot 33537 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The lot description[1] noted, "German States: Hannover. Ernst August gold 5 Taler 1850-B MS63 NGC, Hannover mint. The first we have handled of this lesser-seen type, presenting with significant splendor at the Choice Mint tier." The bust of the king is of Ernst August, last of the sons of George III of England. Various types of five thaler pieces were struck most years between 1813 and 1856; the type shown here was issued 1849-50 only and is scarce. The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866.
