Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74595

This specimen was lot 74595 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1798-PLM. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS MS-61. Argent surfaces are augmented by lustrous golden highlights in the peripheral elements. A lovely example. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1793-1800 along with KM 404, which had a bust obverse. When this denomination was introduced, it was worth one sixth thaler but by the reign of George III, it had slipped to one-ninth thaler.
