Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55554

This specimen was lot 55554 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1706-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg I Ludwig (future George I of Great Britain). About Uncirculated Details -- Mount Removed. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was issued 1700-11 (confusingly, the 1700 issue is catalogued as Dav-6653). Wild man thalers were issued from this locality as late as 1755. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714.
