Künker Auction 439, lot 2577

This specimen was lot 2577 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSSILBERMÜNZEN, HAMBURG Freie und Hansestadt. 3 Mark 1912. In US-Plastikholder der PCGS mit der Bewertung PR 64 CAM (55959200). Feine Tönung, polierte Platte. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Exemplar der Auktion Teutoburger Münzauktion 106, Borgholzhausen 2016, Nr. 2315. (free city of Hamburg, three mark of 1912. Graded PCGS PR-64CAM. Fine toning, proof.)"

Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This type was struck 1908-14 and is common. The three mark superseded the vereinsthaler which had been permitted to circulate after the unification of 1871.

Recorded mintage: 491,088. Proofs exist.

Specification: 16.66 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter.
