This specimen was lot 29797 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $5,405. The catalog description[1] noted, "Schwäbisch Hall. Free City gold Ducat 1742 MS63 NGC. This rare, one-year issue is struck with the titles of Karl VII and radiates with ample, original luster that effortlessly coats the surfaces, enveloping the bold devices in a halo of golden brilliance. An offering with unending visual allure, quite impressive in this technical grade, and with a reported mintage of just 200 pieces, a model representative of the type." The city of Hall in Swabia was a large issuer of coins in the Middle Ages but by the eighteenth century its issues are few and scarce.
