Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 30417
SB822-30417r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30417 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hall. 1/2 Taler, 1742-PGN. Nuremberg Mint. NGC VF-35. A RARITY of the German states series, this presentable example provides problem free surfaces and consistent wear across the devices. Deep mottled tone cuts across the surfaces, with some lighter areas where circulation is seen. With such a limited mintage, this piece provides a charming and completely original example that is certain to be much demanded." The city of Hall in Swabia ("Schwabisch Hall") was not a regular emitter of coinage but did issue this half thaler for Karl Albrecht of Bavaria, briefly Holy Roman Emperor 1742-45. The small quantity made suggests that it was intended for presentation.

Recorded mintage: 400.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-25.
