Guyana 1977 cent
This specimen was lot 73497 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUYANA. Cent, 1977. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-68 Gold Shield. KM-31. Another seemingly flawless example of this denomination, the present piece--full of radiant beauty and luster--is tied with just one other for the top spot in the PCGS population report. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was obtained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago rather than with other South American nations. This type was struck 1967-92. The Franklin mint struck cents 1976-80 of a different design; these were sold to collectors.
