Guyana 1971 cent
This specimen was lot 73496 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUYANA. Cent, 1971. London or Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-68 Gold Shield. On the verge of perfection, this glistening Gem radiates with tremendous allure and brilliance, and stands as the single finest graded example of the date in the PCGS census. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was obtained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago rather than with other South American nations. This type was struck 1967-92. The Franklin mint struck cents 1976-80 of a different design; these were sold to collectors.
