Guatemala 1809-NG M 2 reales
This specimen was lot 33924 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guatemala: Ferdinand VII 2 Reales 1809 NG-M MS65 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint. A top-quality specimen graced with an abundance of glassy, argent luster, with a hint of Prooflike reflectivity noted throughout. Tinged in a fetching pattern of merlot and sapphire iridescence, this offering is currently the sole-finest example of its date certified by NGC." This "imaginary bust" two reales was struck 1808-10; lacking the bust of the new king Ferdinand VII, the old bust of the abdicated Charles IV was used instead. Guatemala avoided the violence that devastated Mexico during the war of independence but joined Iturbide's empire in 1821.
