Guatemala 1809-NG M 1/2 real
The first specimen was lot 253 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 250 € (about US$388 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1809. Guatemala. M. Medio real. Busto de Carlos IV. Muy bella. Preciosa pátina. Muy rara así. S/C-. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, half real of 1809, Guatemala mint, bust of Charles IV. Very handsome, lustrous, about uncirculated)."
The second specimen was part of lot 28698 in Heritage sale 3031 (Dallas, January 2014), which sold for $352.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Colonial Busted Minors Trio, Three coins as follows: ½ Real 1772 G-P, 2 Reales 1797 NG-M, ½ Real 1809 NG-M. The 1809 ½ Real is close to Mint State and very scarce, the others Fine." This specimen is one of a series struck 1808-10 at Guatemala during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). The type is not rare but nice specimens always bring a premium.
