Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71531
SB1122-71531r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71531 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Cob 4 Reales, 1744-G. Guatemala Mint; Assayer Jose de Leon y Losa (J). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Holed, Fine Details. This is an impressive example considering the RARITY of this date, among the most difficult in the Guatemalan series. The coin exhibits clear surfaces that indicate it was spared from the saltwater damage that plagues so many coins of this type. A hole on the far end of the irregular planchet and an unstruck depression are comparatively inconsequential drawbacks, especially considering how boldly the date is presented. A highly presentable example of his elusive type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was issued from Guatemala 1733-46 and is not at all common. The pieces are often called cobs but aren't really as they were not struck by the hammer but in a screw press. The mint did not have the equipment to cut round blanks and edge them as Mexico was doing, so this was the best they could do. Cayón does not award this date a premium.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 12.61 g.
