Guatemala 1736-G J 8 reales
This specimen was lot 74444 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Cob 8 Reales, 1736-G J. Guatemala Mint. Philip V. PCGS FINE-15. A circulated example that still displays a bold four-digit date, which combined with its unpierced preservation make it a desirable example of the type. Some planchet flaws noted at the lower rims. From the Richard August Collection." 1733 was the first year the Guatemala mint struck coinage, having first applied for authorization from the Spanish crown in 1714. The machinery was brought from Mexico City and had already seen much service. In addition, in Guatemala there were few skilled workers, making production of milled coins equivalent to those being produced at Mexico City not feasible[2]. The endeavor was abandoned shortly thereafter and the mint began striking coins on irregular planchets without applying edge devices.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.94 g.
