Guatemala 1736-G J 4 reales
The specimen shown was lot 1221 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 295 euros (about US$487 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Felipe V (1700-1746). 1736. Guatemala. J. 4 reales. Columnario. Curioso defecto de acuñación. Escasa. (MBC). (Philip V (1700-46), four reales of 1736, Guatemala mint; pillar type, curious mint defect, very fine.)
This type was issued from Guatemala 1733-46 and is not at all common. One could dismiss this bizarre piece as a holed specimen except that the weight is too close to correct for that to be the case. 1733 was the first year the Guatemala mint struck coinage, having first applied for authorization from the Spanish crown in 1714. The machinery was brought from Mexico City and had already seen much service. In addition, in Guatemala there were few skilled workers, making production of milled coins equivalent to those being produced at Mexico City not feasible[2]. The endeavor was abandoned shortly thereafter and the mint began striking coins on irregular planchets without applying edge devices.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, .399 troy oz ASW, this specimen 13.52 g.
