Greece 1984 5000 drachmes
This specimen was lot 74216 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREECE. 5000 Drachmai, 1984. CHOICE PROOF. Commemorating the Los Angeles Olympic Games. A wonderful proof striking in gold that honors the Olympic games from the country where the games originated. This beauty remains as made, housed in the original capsule and with box and COA# 11000." This coin is listed in the SCWC as a 5,000 drachmes, which appears to match how it is spelled on the coin. We forgive the auctioneers' error as the spelling is not consistent from issue to issue. This example realized half the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: 15,000 proofs.
Specification: 8 g, 0.900 fine gold, 0.2315 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-29; KM-146.
