The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown a part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is a nickel five lepta minted in Paris (privy marks). The reverse features an owl seated on an amphora. It is accompanied by nickel ten (KM 63) and twenty lepta (KM 64). French designer Charles Pillet is also remembered for designing the "Caballito" peso of Mexico.
