Greece 1911 drachma rev H3026-25052.jpg

The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown a part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is a silver drachma minted in Paris (privy marks) 1910-11. It was accompanied by a silver two drachmai and was the last silver issue before World War One wrecked the hard currency system. It was lot 25052 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,762.50.
