from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71521

This specimen was lot 71521 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Pounds, 1996. Llantrisant Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. One of the RARER dates in the series, this example emanates from the penultimate year of issue, and features flawless mirrored surfaces complimented by frosty devices." This type was struck 1985-86, 1990-97, as a revival of the old five pounds struck in Victorian and Edwardian times. It was accompanied by a gold sovereign and two pounds, also not intended to circulate.

Recorded mintage: 742 (901 per the SCWC).
