This specimen was part of lot 20527 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), which sold for $2,702.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Four Piece Sovereign Proof Set, 1991. GEM BRILLIANT PROOF. Authorized mintage of only 1,500 sets, but according to Spink only 1,336 sets were issued. Set also includes a medalette with Royal crown, monarchs name and date of the set. With case of issue and certificate of authenticity and low serial # 27. All are sharply struck as would be expected being a Royal mint product with hard flashy proof surfaces and stark contrast to the frosted devices. All are essentially as made. From the High Rise Collection." This bust was used 1985-86, 1990-97 while KM 949 was struck 1987-91. This denomination was a revival of the old five pounds struck in Victorian and Edwardian times. It was accompanied by a gold half sovereign, sovereign and two pounds, also not intended to circulate.

Recorded mintage: 1,500 authorized but 1,336 sold.
