Sincona sale 51, lot 2694

This specimen was lot 2694 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Elizabeth II. 1952-. 5 Pounds 1985, London. Polierte Platte. FDC. (kingdom of Great Britain, Elizabeth II, since 1952, five pounds of 1985, London mint. Choice Proof.)"

This type was issued 1985-97 in small numbers and sold as bullion coins. The denomination has not circulated since the time of Edward VII (and probably not much even then). Other gold five pound types have been issued after this one (KM 924, KM 949, KM 958, KM 1003), all for sale to collectors.

Recorded mintage: 14,000 + 13,000 proofs.
