This specimen was lot 7286 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 3 Pence, 1870. London Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-65. A gorgeous little Gem, with shimmering luster and subtle toning colors that appear with the coin is rotated in the light." This type, KM 730, was struck 1838-87 for Maundy sets and for circulation, unlike the other small silver denominations. The Maundy threepence is common, the circulation issue is a slightly better date.

Recorded mintage: 1,288,000 plus 4,488 for the Maundy sets.

Specification: 1.41 g, 0.925 fine silver.
