Great Britain 1837 penny
This specimen was lot 20317 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1837. London Mint. William IV. PCGS MS-64 Brown Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just one example, this dazzling near-Gem features intense brown color highlighted by an electrified cobalt blue nature and dripping with luster." The type, struck 1831, 1834 and 1837, is available in worn condition but quite expensive in the upper grades. The silver pennies used in the Maundy sets, tho struck in small quantities, are much more available because they were carefully saved.
