SB1123-73789r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73789 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 4 Pence, 1837. London Mint. William IV. PCGS MS-66. A premium Gem that is surpassed by only one specimen on the PCGS population report, this handsome example is richly toned and retains good alluring luster throughout. A piece that will capture many excited bids from collectors of British coinage." This type was struck 1836-37 for circulation in the colonies, especially British Guiana. This example strongly resembles the plate coin in the SCWC, down to the same clashed die marks on the reverse. Another groat with a numeric reverse (KM 711) was struck 1831-37 for the Maundy sets. The Maundy type was struck in smaller numbers but was extensively saved, making it more common today.

Recorded mintage: 962,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 1.88 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3837; KM-723.
