This specimen was lot 2293 in Goldberg sale 110 (Los Angeles, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Penny, 1827. George IV. Obverse: Laureate portrait of king left, made from dies by William Wyon, taken from a bust by Sir Francis Chantrey. GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA, date 1827 below. Reverse: Britannia seated right with plain trident. BRITANNIAR: REX FID: DEF: A glossy mint state example of this, probably the rarest date of Pennies intended for circulation. Most of the original mint sheen intact, and a little mint red still evident in the lettering. An exceptional specimen, and one of Britain's classic copper rarities. NGC graded MS-61 Brown." This type was struck 1825-27 for George IV and was the first penny struck for circulation since 1806. The 1827 is a rare date despite the substantial mintage.
