Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74788
SB924-74788r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74788 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Penny, 1829. London Mint. George IV. NGC MS-63. An exceptional minor, this example yields mostly argent central areas, with some alluring iridescent toning more evident as one moves outward." This type was struck 1822-30 for the Maundy sets; 83,608 were made for the entire series. Being assiduously saved by their recipients, it is common today. Curiously, having made the silver penny obsolete for circulation use, the mint did not strike any copper pennies in 1829.

Recorded mintage: 7,920.

Specification: 0.47 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3821; KM-683.
