H3067-34229r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34229 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: George III 6 Pence 1819 MS65 NGC. An impressive offering and sculpturesque devices that are pleasantly highlighted by dark accents. The fields exhibit a full mint bloom of opalescence with deep violets, teal, and champagne that nicely accompanied the bold cartwheel luster. The date appears to be struck over an improperly stamped year, with a smaller 8 and an inverted 9." This type was struck 1816-20 as part of the reform that saw a new mint building and entirely new, steam-powered, machinery. The first sixpence struck since the 1780's, it featured a weight reduction from 3.02 g to 2.82 g, which standard was used until 1920. Altho George III's portrait appears, by this time he was completely insane and the prince regent ruled.

Recorded mintage: 4,712,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 2.82 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 665, S-3791.
