Great Britain 1818 sovereign
This specimen was lot 30773 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $5,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: George III gold Sovereign 1818 MS62 PCGS. Ascending colon after BRITANNIAR. The more common type for this year, but certainly uncommon for its preservation and fantastic eye appeal. Dazzling with mint luster and with needle-sharp devices, it is perhaps its intense color which first captures the attention - a gorgeous tiger's eye gold with a sublime ring of deeper honey hue residing in the reverse garter." This type was struck for George III 1817-20 as part of the coinage reform of 1817. Despite substantial mintages, all the dates are scarce in nice condition.
Recorded mintage: 2,347,000 + proofs.
Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW.
