This specimen was lot 34002 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: George II gold 1/2 Guinea 1738 AU58 NGC. A notably attractive example of this monarch's half guineas, the king's portrait quite sharp and overall friction kept to an absolute minimum. A spot of die rust is noted on the shield on the reverse." This type, struck 1728-39, is priced about the same as the accompanying guinea, suggesting that it is considerably scarcer. A rare variety exists (KM 565.2) with "E.I.C." below the bust, indicating gold from the East India Company.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.175 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-345, KM 565.1, S-3667B.
