Great Britain 1702 VIGO shilling
This specimen was lot 582 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, October 2010), where it sold for $1150. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GREAT BRITAIN. Anne, 1702-1714. Shilling, 1702. VIGO. Choice About Uncirculated. First bust l. VIGO below. Rv. Cruciform Arms. A strong strike and rich gray toning combine to create a pleasing look on this scarce date. Only a touch of friction on the high points can be seen under close scrutiny. First year of this two year commemorative type, struck from Spanish silver captured at Vigo Bay. Choice About Uncirculated. From the Q. David Bowers Collection; ex Goldberg, privately."
The shillings of Queen Anne come in many varieties (KM 509, 517, 523, 533), none rare in circulated condition. The VIGO shillings bring a premium because of the swashbuckling association.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver, .179 troy oz ASW.
