The first specimen was lot 3100 in Goldberg sale 87 (Los Angeles, September 2015), where it sold for $564. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Twopence, 1698. William III. Electric blue toning. Uncirculated and probably from the same original Maundy Set as the Penny offered here. This is so well struck it has the appearance of a specimen or specially made piece. NGC graded MS-64." The second specimen was part of lot 22791 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), which sold for $780. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Set, 1698. William III (1694-1702). S-3553; KM-MDS30. Nicely struck with even tone and strong underlying luster. Quite exceptional for this normally well circulated issue. All designated prooflike by PCGS. Provenance: From the Q. David Bowers Collection." This type is listed for 1698 only yet is fairly common. The reverse was redesigned for 1699-1700 (KM 500.2).
