This specimen was part of lot 31595 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: William & Mary 4-Piece Certified Maundy Set 1689 NGC, 1) Penny - AU58, S-3444; 2) 2 Pence - AU55, S-3443; 3) 3 Pence - XF45, S-3441; 4) 4 Pence - AU53, S-3439. A highly attractive Maundy set, each piece exhibiting varying degrees of toning ranging from gunmetal to midnight blue. The rarest Maundy set of William and Mary and perhaps one of the rarest in the Maundy series as a whole, primarily due to the Penny which is hard to find in any grade, and even more so in the lofty near-Mint State certification this present offering has received. A must-have for the dedicated collector of British Maundy sets." This type is listed for 1689 only. Maundy sets comprised silver one, two, three and fourpence.
