Sincona sale 77, lot 2371

This specimen was lot 2371 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,335 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich. James II. 1685-1688. 1/2 Guinea 1687, London. Sehr schön. Kratzer. (kingdom of Great Britain, James II, 1685-88, half guinea of 1687, London mint. Laureate bust. Very fine, Scratch.)"

This type was struck 1686-88. There is a similar type (KM 458.2) struck in 1686 with an elephant and castle added below the king's bust; this marked gold obtained from Africa.
