SB124-52165 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52165 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 6 Pence, 1687. London Mint. James II. NGC MS-63. Type II Shield variety. RARE in the present state; sixpence were an uncommon denomination as whole prior to the Great Recoinage of 1695, and a Mint State survivor is seldom seen. This deeply toned and lustrous example takes the spot as the sole finest certified of the variety by NGC." This type was struck 1685-87 during James's brief reign. We also note KM 456.1 for 1685-87 with slightly different shaped shields on the reverse. A 1687/6 overdate is noted.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.01 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3413; KM-456.2; ESC-777.
