Great Britain 1653 crown Fr-271
This specimen was lot 2366 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 5,750 CHF (about US$6,980 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich. Commonwealth, 1649-1660. Gold crown of 5 Shillings 1653, London. Over 40. Mintmark sun. Selten. NGC AU55. (commonwealth of Great Britain, 1649-60, gold crown of 1653, 1653/40 overdate, sun mintmark, London mint. Rare.)"
By 1650, king Charles was dead and his son fled into exile but Cromwell was unable to bring unity to England. The gold coins of his rule (unite, double crown and crown) are all rare. This type was struck 1649-57.
