SB125-33079r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33079 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Stunning 1/2 Crown from the Short-Lived Bridgnorth-on-Severn Mint, GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, 1646. Bridgnorth-on-Severn Mint; mm: Plume. Charles I. NGC MS-62. Declaration type. Obverse: Charles I, holding reign and sword, riding horse left, plumes to right and below; Reverse: Three plumes above ornamental scroll, two lines of text, additional plume at top and below. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE as an emission from this mint, and very likely the only Mint State example attainable of this variety, with most pieces exhibiting heavy circulation. This piece easily bests its brother from the Murdoch/Hamilton-Smith/Lockett/Brooker collections, which despite being among the finest extant examples exhibits evident wear and double striking. The present example is by contrast not only admirably preserved but beautifully struck, with a remarkable and perhaps singular level of fine detail evident upon the horse and rider. The surfaces are additionally quite wholesome and unquestionably Mint State, with bold unbroken luster and antique patina throughout. This coin was displayed in 2007 at the Coins, Crown & Conflict exhibit at the Money Museum in Colorado Springs, CO, by the American Numismatic Association. Ex: J.G. Brooker. Ex: R.C. Lockett (Glendining - 11/4/1958) Lot #3502. Ex. G. Hamilton-Smith (Glendining - 5/23/1927) Lot #324." This shortlived mint also struck threepence, sixpence and shillings.
