Sincona sale 73, lot 1309

This specimen was lot 1309 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,094 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich. Charles I. 1625-1649. Gold crown o. J. (1634/35), Tower Mint. Group D. Fourth bust. Mintmark bell. Sehr schön. Leicht gewellt. (kingdom of Great Britain, Charles I, 1625-49, undated gold crown, bell mintmark. Very fine, Slightly bent.)"

This gold crown (five shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), unite (Fr-246) and double crown (Fr-247). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.
