SB523-72278r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72278 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GIBRALTAR. 5 Sovereigns, 1989. Surrey (Pobjoy) Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Mintage: 300. An amazing nearly-perfect example of the always popular "Una and the Lion" type faithfully rendered in the 5 Pounds denomination. This piece yields amazing contract and almost no evidence of haze, mark, or tone. A piece that should be much contested by anyone who loves the Una design." The semi-autonomous colony of Gibraltar has been captured by the Pobjoy Mint and used as a conduit for the issue of hundreds of NCLT on serious and frivolous topics.

Recorded mintage: est. 1,989.

Specification: 39.83 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-B1; KM-30.
