Jean Elsen sale 163, lot 1623
JE163-1623r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1261 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY, Weimar Republic, Hamburg mint, "oak tree" 5 mark, 1930-J, NGC MS 62. Very lightly toned over muted cartwheel luster, scarce date-mint combination (low mintage)." This type, issued 1927-33, was struck in large numbers in Berlin ("A"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J", shown here). It is, however, expensive; perhaps they were melted during World War Two. We have included it in our category of thalers based on its size, even tho it is only 0.500 fine. The second specimen was lot 1623 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €320 (about US$370 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, République de Weimar, AR 5 Reichsmark, 1930 J. Rare. (Germany, Weimar Republic, silver five mark of 1930. Rare, Very Fine.)"

Recorded mintage: 740,000, a rare date.

Specification: 25 g, 0.500 fine silver, 37 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-966, KM-56; J-331; A.K.S. 25.
