Germany 1928-G 5 mark Dav-966
This specimen was lot 74670 in Stack's Bowers May 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $732. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Weimar Republic. 5 Mark, 1928-G. Karlsruhe Mint. PCGS MS-66. Oak Tree Type. Tied for finest known at PCGS with five other examples. Sharp argent features adorn argent-grey fields and mottled charcoal grey toning. Attractive." This type, issued 1927-33, was struck in large numbers in Berlin ("A"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G", shown here) and Hamburg ("J"). It is, however, expensive; perhaps they were melted during World War Two. We have included it in our category of thalers based on its size, even tho it is only 0.500 fine.
