Steve Album sale 51, lot 3043

This specimen was lot 3043 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Kaiserreich, 5 pfennig, 1915-D, struck in iron, beautiful luster with light multicolored toning, PCGS graded MS66." This coin is from a type issued 1915-22 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Munich (mintmark "D", shown here), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Wartime shortages forced the regime to convert this denomination from copper-nickel (KM 11) to iron (more likely steel) as shown here. The highly corrodible alloy means choice survivors are few.

Recorded mintage: 2,021,000, a better date, plus 3,516,000 in copper-nickel (KM 11).

Specification: 2.51 g, iron or steel, 17.8 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-19, J-297.
