Germany 1917-D 5 pfennig
This specimen was lot 2621 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Kaiserreich, 5 pfennig, 1917-D, a superb example, PCGS graded MS65." This coin is a iron (more likely steel) five pfennig from a type issued 1915-22 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Munich (mintmark "D", shown here), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. The pre-war five pfennig were copper-nickel but the alloy was converted to iron because of wartime shortages. Worthless in circulated condition, it is difficult to find nice.
