German East Africa 1891 pesa
The first specimen shown was lot 1507 in Stephen Album sale 14 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2012), where it sold for US$112. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA: Wilhem II, 1888-1918, AE pesa, 1891, choice Uncirculated." The second specimen was part of lot 22620 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), which sold for $431.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Mixed Lot of Thirteen Coins. We have here a very useful grouping of coins from German East Africa as well as coins from Bavaria, Bremen, Hessen, Trier, and more. Grades range from Fine to UNC." This type was struck 1890-92 for German East Africa. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
