The first specimen was lot 1486 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $111.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA: Wilhelm II, 1888-1918, 1 pesa, 1890, PCGS graded MS64 RB." The second specimen was lot 7003 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA. Pesa, 1890. Berlin Mint. Wilhelm II. NGC MS-66 Red. Pop: 7, none graded finer by NGC. A gorgeous Gem with radiant red surfaces, satiny luster, and sharp strike." This type was struck 1890-92 for German East Africa. This is the lowest mintage date yet is the most common, suggesting that many stayed behind in Germany, ensconced in coin collections.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs.

Specification: copper.
