Geneva 1627-HC thaler Dav-4621
This specimen was lot 2542 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$1,007 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Genf/Genève, Stadt und Kanton, Taler (Ecu) 1627, Genf. In der Rückseitenumschrift das ligierte Münzzeichen HC. Selten. Fast sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, thaler or écu of 1627, Geneva mint, mintmaster's initials "HC" in the reverse legend. Rare, About very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 3263 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$872 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Genf/Genève, Stadt und Kanton, Taler (Ecu) 1627, Genf. Mzz. HC (ligiert). Sehr schön. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand. Exemplar der Auktion F. R. Künker 183, Osnabrück, März 2011, Los 2176. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, thaler or écu of 1627, Geneva mint, mintmark ligated "HC". Very fine, Flan flaw on edge.)"
This type was struck 1620-27, 1630, 1633-42, 1657, 1659. Most dates are rare and the 1627 is a better date. Only the 1622 and 1623 are reasonably available.
Recorded mintage: unknown but the last date not extremely rare.
Specification: silver, the first specimen 27.77 g. the second specimen is 28.17 g.
