Sincona sale 63, lot 1397

This specimen was lot 1397 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$877 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Geldern, Provinz, 1/2 Löwentaler 1639. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Leichte Prägeschwäche. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Netherlands, province of Gelderland, half lion daalder of 1639, Very rare, Extremely fine, Slightly weakly struck, Extraordinary condition.)"

"Lion" daalders were struck in Gelderland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary. This type was struck with various mintmarks 1606-53 with this subtype appearing 1637-47. It has a low catalog value as nearly all specimens are so wretchedly made as to be uncollectible. Halfway decent specimen such as the one shown here bring large premiums.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.84 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 13.41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 13.4, Delmonte 869.
