Gelderland 1639 daalder Dav-4849
This specimen was lot 75199 in Stack's Bowers May 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $170.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gelderland. Lion Dollar (Daalder), 1639. Harderwijk Mint. NGC EF Details--Cleaned." "Lion" daalders were struck in Gelderland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (40 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (50 stuivers), the silver ducat (48 stuivers), the three gulden (57 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider or 60 stuivers). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary. This variety was struck 1636-46. A earlier variety (KM 15.1) was struck 1606-38; it has a cross after "GEL".
