Gabon 1969-NI 5000 francs
This specimen was lot 31073 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Gabon: Republic gold Proof "Reliquary Figure - Bakota" 5000 Francs 1969-NI PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. This interesting commemorative issue depicts an obverse portrait of Albert-Bernard Bongo and the reverse of a reliquary figure, or Mbulu Ngulu, of the native Bakota tribe. These figures were especially important to the Bakota and utilized as guardians over their ancestors' remains. This piece is tied for finest at NGC with one other. From the Paramount Collection." Other NCLT's for 1969 include a 1000 francs (KM 6), 3000 francs (KM 7), 10000 francs (KM 9) and 20,000 francs (KM 10).
