Fulda 1788-W thaler Dav-2263
This specimen was lot 46056 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Fulda. Taler, 1788. Sede Vacante. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, Unc Details. Struck in commemoration of the death of Bishop Heinrich VIII." The "X E.F.M." means "ten to the fine mark"; i.e. a convention thaler. A ten and twenty kreuzer were also issued on this occasion. Heinrich VIII, bishop of Fulda 1759-88, does not seem to have held any other clerical titles, unusual as most of his contemporaries were committed pluralists. The prince-bishopric was abolished in 1802 and eventually partitioned between Hesse and Bavaria.
